Seven Things To Know About The Dethroned Emir Of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi

The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje on Monday dethroned the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II over some allegation levelled against him by the state government.

The development was revealed in a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Usman Alhaji, he noted that the decision was in line with the recommendation of the Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission.

The state government also stated that the dethronement was part of its move to safeguard the “sanctity, culture, tradition, religion and prestige” of the Kano State Emirate which was established over a millennium ago.

However, here are important things to know about the dethrone Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

1. The former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi is known for stating his view about important issues affecting the country, he did not begin to show these traits when he accessed the throne but before his appointment, he speaks on issues regarding the polity and economy of Nigeria.

He recently challenged political leaders in the north of not doing enough for the region, he further stated that the region will so be destroyed if the leaders fail to act on the truth.

2. Sanusi ascended the throne in 2014, taking over from his granduncle Ado Bayero. His grandfather, Muhammadu Sanusi I, was the 11th Emir of Kano from 1953 until 1963.

The former Emir of Kano was dethroned in a similar style that saw his grandfather deposed of his duty.

3. He was a scholar who established himself in the Nigeria banking and finance sector, rising from management roles in different banks to becoming the CEO of First Bank, one of Africa’s largest financial institutions.

Sanusi received a bachelor degree in economics from the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria in 1981, He later received a masters degree in economics two years later from the university and lectured at the faculty.

Recall that he was nominated as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria by the former president, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

4. Sanusi was known for building initiative around “enhancing the quality of banks, establishing financial stability, enabling healthy financial sector evolution and ensuring that the financial sector contributes to the real economy”.

He led the central bank to secure #400 billion of public money and dismissed their chief executives. He also introduced a consolidation process which reduced the number of Nigerian banks through merger and acquisitions, in a bid to make them stronger and more accountable to depositors.

5. Sanusi was suspended as CBN governor by former President Goodluck Jonathan over the allegation levelled against the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) of not remitting some $20 billion to state coffers.

However, an investigation carried out on the allegation filed against NNPC was not taken seriously by the Nigeria Senate and other concerned sectors.

6. Sanusi was crowned the Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II on 9 June 2014, as the Emir of Kano, he automatically became a leader of the Tijaniyya Sufi order, the second-most-important Muslim position in Nigeria after the Sultan of Sokoto, leader of the larger Qadiriyya Sufi order.

Though some challenged his appointment claiming that the rightful heir to the throne was his cousin.

7. The former Emir was known for speaking against lack of schools in the Northern region, he noted that the leaders complained about children walking around on streets while they refuse to build schools for them to attend.
