N-Power: National Assembly Summons Minister, Sadiya Farouq

Amidst the lingering expectation of the payment of the pending January stipends to beneficiaries of the federal government N-Power scheme, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq has appeared before the House of Representatives.

The Minister appeared along with the N-Power team led by Afolabi Imoukhuede, the senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on job creation and youth empowerment.

They appeared on Wednesday before the lawmakers for an investigative hearing on the N-Power scheme at the Federal House of Representatives, Abuja.

Although details of what was discussed at the meeting were not yet public as at the time of filing this report, Naija News understands it is not unconnected with the welfare of Nigerians currently employed under the N-Power scheme and other schemes captured under the National Social Intervention Programme (NSIP).

The investigative hearing on the activities of the scheme follows the unanimous adoption of the motion moved last year by a House of Rep member, Taiwo Oluga, titled ‘Urgent Need to Investigate the Arbitrariness and Possible Corruption in the N-Power Programme of the Federal Government.

Meanwhile, many N-Power beneficiaries have started calling out the government on social media over the delay in the payment of their N30,000 monthly stipend for the month of January. Some are even expressing hope that it will be paid along with February’s due since it has already been delayed for so long.

The N-Power scheme was introduced in 2016 by President Muhammadu Buhari, as a two-year social investment scheme for graduate and non-graduate Nigerians between the ages of 18-35.

The beneficiaries enjoy N30, 000 monthly stipend, and devices during the duration of their stay in the scheme.
