An Air Canada plane bound for Toronto made an emergency landing at Madrid International Airport on Monday after pilots reported an engine problem and a tire blowout shortly after takeoff.

The Boeing 767 carrying 128 passengers flew at length over the south-east of the Adolfo Suarez-Barajas airport “to consume fuel and lighten the plane for landing,” Air Canada said.

The “engine problem” occurred soon after takeoff, according to the carrier. One of the aircraft’s ten tires also allegedly burst on takeoff.

The Spanish Ministry of Defense has claimed that an F18 fighter plane took off from a military airport in the Madrid region in an attempt to assess the damage to the Boeing’s landing gear.
