The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the Southwest security outfit, Operation Amotekun, has come to stay.

Recall that the Southwest governors a few weeks ago launched the security outfit in Ibadan, Oyo State capital with the aim of protecting the people of the region.

The establishment of the security outfit has stirred reactions from organizations, notable individuals and political officeholders.

While some believe that the decision is a good step towards ending insecurity in Southwest, others think the security outfit is targeted at some groups or is created to actualize the Oduduwa republic.

Makinde while speaking to some people under the Yoruba Worldwide Congress stated that Amotekun us targeted at complementing the effort of the existing security agencies and not targeted at anyone.

The Oyo State Governor who spoke through his Chief of Staff, Bisi Ilaka, noted that the protest was a further commitment to the idea.

Ilaka added that the police cannot be everywhere, hence the need for the security outfit to curb insecurity in the region.

Makinde said, “The idea of Amotekun is one that has come to stay. It is not one that’s supposed to rival either the police or other security apparatus which are national in nature.”

“All we’re trying to do is to complement their efforts. It’s a fact that the police cannot be everywhere, they can’t be in all the nooks and crannies of this State but we know that the national security apparatus is well stretched so we’re only trying to complement.”

“But it’s an idea that has come to stay because we have security challenges in this part of the world and in order that we can address them and complement the efforts of the police, this is an idea that has come to stay.”

“I am sure the commitment that the governors have demonstrated is just the beginning.”

“The demonstrations will demonstrate further commitment to this idea. So, people can buff and puff, nothing is going to change, the idea has definitely come to stay”.
