The Presidency has said President Muhammadu Buhari is not compelled by any law to publicly declare his assets.

Naija News reports that The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has given President Buhari, his Vice, Osinbajo and 35 state governors a seven days ultimatum to reveal details of their assets publicly.

Recall that the human rights organization had earlier gotten a court permit to request for information on the summary of the assets, specifically property and income as contained in their asset declaration forms submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

However in a Freedom of Information requests (FoI) sent by SERAP to the Presidency, also captured the 35 state governors and their deputies, urging them to use their good offices to clarify within 7 days of receiving the FoI request.

Reacting while speaking on Channels TV on Monday, Buhari’s media adviser, Femi Adesina insisted that the decision to make the assets public is a matter of voluntary will and not a compulsion.

“The President will do what the law requires of him and I can say for a fact that the President has declared his assets,” he said.

“Declaring that publicly is not in our law but voluntary therefore he cannot be compelled to do so.”

When asked if the President will oblige if the FOI Act was invoked, he said making Buhari’s assets public will be a decision the Code of Conduct Bureau will have to make.

“If FOI Act is invoked, it will be left with the Code of Conduct Bureau to release such information. The President has declared and already deposited the documents to them. So, it’s left to them to make such a decision,” he ended.
