Sagay Slams NASS, Accuses Lawmakers Of Making Irrelevant Amendments To Nigeria's Constitution

The Department of State Service has been condemned by the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Itse Sagay, for re-arresting the convener of the RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore.

Sagay while stating his position on the action of DSS stated that the secret police owes Nigerians an explanation for invading the Federal High Courtroom.

DSS has, however, denied invading the court premises to re-arrest the publisher of the Sahara Reporter.

The spokesperson of DSS, Peter Afunanya, had claimed that Sowore acted a structured drama inside the court.

The Nation quoted Sagay on Sunday as saying Sowore’s re-arrest looks bad, adding that no one should blame the Presidency.

Sagay said: “I agree that the DSS (operatives) have their job. They don’t need the approval of the Presidency to do their job. So, no one should blame the Presidency for anything the DSS does.”

“However, the re-arrest of Sowore looks bad on the surface in the sense that the man was released a day earlier, and he was in court the next day to answer the charges and he is arrested.”

He stated that Nigerians are entitled to an explanation, he further stated that something is wrong with the action of the secret police. He noted that they have a reason and they should tell us what the reason is.

Sagay noted that they should not be quiet about it if their actions are justified, he noted that
they can not act and be quiet and expect everyone to accept their action.

He asked if the offence they are re-arresting him for if he committed it after he was released.

“If it is something he had said before, then I don’t see any justification for his re-arrest, because he has been given bail.”

“But if it is something fresh maybe he said something after he was released that constitutes a security risk or is a danger to the country then they should make it clear so that we are not confused.”
