1. Buhari Launches Reviewed National Security Strategy

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday unveiled the reviewed National Security Strategy 2019 with a fresh promise to enhance the security situation in the country.

The event held shortly before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House in Abuja.

2. Senate Receives Report On 2020 Budget

The Nigeria Senate on Wednesday received the report of the 2020 Appropriation Bill from the Chairman Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Jibrin Barau.

Naija News reports that the motion to present the report was moved by Senator Barau and was seconded by Senator Bassey Albert Akpan.

3. Edo Assembly Declares 12 Seats Vacant

The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Francis Okiye, has declared seats of 12 members-elect vacant for refusing to present their certificates of return to the Clerk for inaguration.

The Speaker also declared the seats of Uyi Ekhosuehi and Henry Okaka, representing Oredo East and Owan East respectively, vacant for allegedly absconding from plenary after the inauguration of the Seventh Assembly on June 17.

4. Senate Won’t Pass Hate Speech Bill – Ahmed Lawan

Senate President Ahmed Lawan has said the Upper Legislative chambers will not pass the proposed Hate Speech Bill.

This is following the outcry and protests that greeted the hate speech bill proposed by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (APC-Niger State).

5. Nigerian Senate Grants Full Autonomy To LGAs

Nigeria’s Local Government system has received a massive boost as the National Assembly has granted full financial, administrative and political autonomy to all the 774 local council authorities across Nigeria by amending section 124 of the nation’s constitution.

The section provides a subsection that makes the local councils, a full third tier government without undue interference from the state governments.

6. Many Injured, Properties Destroyed In Lagos Gas Explosion

Three people have been reportedly injured following a gas explosion at Four Point by Sheraton Hotel, Oniru VI in Lagos State.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), many cars are reportedly damaged in the incident on Wednesday.

7. House of Reps Increase 2020 Budget

The Federal House of Representatives has increased the 2020 Appropriation Bill from the N10.33 trillion proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari to about N10.6 trillion.

Naija News reports that the House Committee on Finance had proposed the new figure and it would lay its report on the 2020 budget at plenary today, Wednesday.

8. Saraki, Yari, Others Must Refund Pension Collected As Ex-Govs – Court Tells AGF

The Federal High Court in Lagos, in a landmark judgment, has directed the Nigerian Government to recover all pensions collected by all former governors now serving as Senators and Ministers of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria.

It also directed the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN to challenge the legality of states’ pension laws permitting former governors and other ex-public officials to collect such pensions.

9. Nigeria Has Problems Bigger Than Hate Speech Bill – Lawmaker

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Shina Peller has reacted to the controversial hate speech bill currently before the lawmakers.

According to the lawmaker representing Iseyin/ Itesiwaju/ Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency in the lower chamber of the National Assembly, Nigeria ‘is faced with a lot of problems that are more critical than Hate Speech’

10. President Buhari Makes Fresh Appointments

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of nine new permanent secretaries in the Federal Civil Service.

This was made known in a statement issued by the Director of Communications in the Office of the Acting Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Olawunmi Ogunmosule.
