Unai Emery Sacked As Arsenal Coach

Arsenal on Friday confirmed the sacking of its head coach, Unai Emery after just 18 months in charge of the North London club.

As earlier reported by Naija News, the club also appointed Freddie Ljungberg to be in charge of the team on a temporary basis until a permanent coach is appointed.

Speaking after the sack of the 48-year-old who took over from Arsene Wenger in March 2018, the club management revealed Emery was sacked because “results and performances” were “not at the level required”.

Josh Kroenke, son of Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke said: “Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”

The club statement added: “The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required.

“We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward.

“The search for a new head coach is underway and we will make a further announcement when that process is complete.”

Arsenal will take on Norwich City on Sunday in what will be Ljungberg’s first game in charge of the team as the post-Emery era kicks off.
