Nigerian Senate Reintroduces Bill To Curb Fake News

The act of cyber-bullying, fake news and hate speech is one of the critical misinterpretations of Nigerian culture that has misrepresented the African societal values.

Naija News understands that these actions has led the Nigerian government to commence the process of injecting sanity into the social media space as the Nigerian Senate reintroduces a new bill Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulations Bill, 2019’ to regulate social media use.

Speaking with journalists in his office, the sponsor of the new bill, Mr. Mohammed Sani Musa, said the bill will curb fake news on the internet. He also said that the bill is not an attempt to gag the social media or right to free press.  It is a legislation that will guide how we can tolerate our activities on social media.

Naija News recalls that a similar anti-social media bill introduced by the previous eighth Senate sparked outrage across the country, and was later withdrawn.

Meanwhile, The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has reinstated the commitment of the Federal Government to curb all forms of cyber-bullying, fake news and hate speech.

Speaking during an interview, Alhaji Lai revealed that the ministry has written letters to the major stakeholders who would nominate representatives and look at how best to confront this menace.
