Charlton Athletic manager, Lee Bowyer, has slammed Arsenal for signing Nicolas Pepe from Lille for a club-record of £75million in the summer.

Arsenal had signed Pepe to provide more options on the wing, which led to the departure of Alex Iwobi to Everton.

However, Pepe is yet to hit top form with just three goals scored so far and a handful of assist.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate programme, Bowyer said Unai Emery should have gone for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.

He said, “Defensively Arsenal are frail, they concede too many goals.

“Their centre-halves have been a problem for years. It’s not just been this season, it’s been for a while now.

“But they would rather spend £75million on a winger than a centre-back.

“Harry Maguire would have been perfect for them, why didn’t they get him?”
