Balogun Floors Ajimobi At Appeal Court

The court of appeal sitting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has laid to rest the dispute that arose from the February 23, 2019 National Assembly election in Oyo South.

The appeal panel on Friday, dismissed the petition by Sen. Abiola Ajimobi, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against the election victory of Dr. Kola Balogun of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the initial results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the February National Assembly election, the PDP candidate emerged with 105,720 votes to defeat his closest challenger, the candidate of the APC who had 92,217 votes.

Not satisfied with the result, Ajimobi had challenged the results before the tribunal. However, the tribunal also affirmed Balogun’s election.

This made Ajimobi appeal the tribunal judgement at the Court of Appeal.

On October 17th, 2019, the Justice Haruna Tsammani led three-man panel after it had adopted the written address of all parties, reserved its judgement and told counsels for both the appellants and respondents that judgment would be communicated to them at a later date.

In its final judgement on Friday, Justice Haruna Tsammani, dismissed Ajimobi’s petition for lacking in merit, thereby upholding the decision of the tribunal.
