Court Delivers First Ruling On 2019 Presidential Dispute

The Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar lost the first battle at the Supreme Court on Wednesday as the court ruled against a motion by Atiku’s counsel.

As earlier reported by Naija News, the Supreme Court of Nigeria on Wednesday, commenced sitting to hear the appeal filed by Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the election victory of President Muhammadu Buhari, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 Presidential election.

Livy Uzoukwu, Atiku’s counsel had requested the panel to allow counsels to adopt all their briefs, both in the main appeal and other (7) interlocutory appeals.

Counsels to other parties in the suit, however, opposed the motion by Uzoukwu. The panel gave the lawyers fifteen minutes’ break to meet and deliberate on the process of proceedings.

Upon resumption, the seven-man panel held that it would be unnecessary to hear the interlocutory appeals when a judgment on the main appeal marked SC.1211/2019 would cover the aspect.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Mohammed who is heading the panel, gave the ruling which was agreed to by other members of the panel.
