Ex-Presidential Aide Sent To Prison For Corruption

Hossein Fereydoun, brother to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has been sent to jail for five years following his conviction of corruption, BBC News reports.

Fereydoun, who served as an aide to the president, was first arrested in July 2017 but was put on trial in February this year on allegations of financial misappropriation.

During the 2013 and 2017 presidential election campaigns in the country, Rouhani had promised to fight corruption in the country.

In May 2019, Hossein was convicted of “receiving bribes” and sentenced to seven years in jail.

However, an appeal court later reduced the jail term but ordered him to return any property that he had acquired illicitly and pay a fine equal to $9m in Iranian currency.

His lawyer, Hossein Sartipi confirmed to local newsmen that his client was committed to Tehran’s Evin prison on Wednesday.

“This morning, Mr Fereydoun together with myself were present at the prosecutor’s office.”

“After legal procedures were completed, he was taken to Evin prison and was admitted to the prison,” he added.

Naija News gathered the President and his brother do not share the same surname because Rouhani changed his to a word meaning ‘spiritual’ or ‘cleric’ decades ago after joining a seminary.
