The United Kingdom has joined other top European nations in punishing the Turkish government over its military operation in northern Syria.

Speaking on the decision of the United Kingdom government to suspended new arms sales to the Turkish government, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told parliament that no further export licenses “for items that might be used in military operations in Syria” would be issued to Turkey until a review had taken place.

He further called on Turkey to “exercise maximum restraint and to bring an end to this unilateral military action.”

The United Kingdom now joins Italy, France, Germany and a number of other countries in halting weapons exports to Ankara in response to a widely criticised offensive that has killed dozens of civilians and displaced more than 275,000 people.
