Breaking: Bayelsa Speaker, Tonye Isenah Resigns

Tonye Emmanuel Isenah, the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, has resigned and has promised to vacate his position on Monday when the house resumes.

According to the report, the Speaker vacated his position due to pressure mounted on him by some leaders in the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the November 16th governorship election.

A further report from Daily Post has it that Hon. Monday Obolo representing Southern Ijaw Constituency 2 is expected to succeed Hon. Tonye Isenah with an aim to seek favour from the people of the Southern Ijaw area where the flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief David Lyon hailed from.

Sources claimed that the emergence of Obolo as Speaker of the state House of Assembly will reduce the high expectation of massive votes for the opposition party in the governorship election.

It was further stated that Isenah decided to resign so that he won’t be blamed in case the ruling party fails to win the Governorship election.

The source said: “Isenah hinted of his resignation while addressing the staff of the Assembly after presiding over plenary on Friday.”

“Members of the House that witnessed the Speaker’s briefing were Felix Bonny Ayah, representing Southern Ijaw Constituency 1, and Moses Marlon, representing Southern Ijaw Constituency 3.”

The Speaker was said to have reached an agreement with Dickson and other PDP leaders to vacate his office in the event that Senator Douye Diri, who hails from his Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area, emerged the candidate of the PDP for the election.

Isenah initially insisted that he would not let go of his position before the governorship poll, adding that he was yet to see how abandoning his office would help PDP win the coming poll.

Confirming the development, Hon. Tonye Isenah, simply said, “yes, I don’t have a choice.”
