The first black American woman to win the 2012 Sundance Film Award for best director, Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, signed her second feature entitled In the middle of nowhere, centred on the prison world. Illustrated by her cinema of conviction, the director is the leader of independent African-American cinema. Indeed, it is also at the origin of the association AFFRM (African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement) which aims to facilitate the financing of films.

Militant, she released in 2015 a biopic on Martin Luther King, Selma. The film focuses on the pastor’s struggles for the civil rights of African Americans. In addition to his film activities, Ava DuVernay also produces documentaries, such as the recent Venus Vs, about Venus Williams’ fight for equal pay between men and women in tennis tournaments.

Recognized by her peers for her various works, the director has since been working on militant subjects. Notably, she had covered the OJ Simpson trial as a journalist. Then his aunt, Denise Sexton, a theatre actress, introduced her into the world of artists. Before that, she turned to advertise and public relations, having even set up her own media communication agency. But cinema has definitely captured it.
