We Are Aware Of Those In SA – Presidency

The Federal Government has defended the presence of Governors Nasir El-Rufai, Kayode Fayemi and Emir Lamido Sanusi in South Africa.

This is coming after the backlash which greeted pictures of the identified Nigerian leaders dining at the World Economic Forum Africa 2019, taking place in Cape Town, South Africa.

This is after the decision of the federal government to shun the World Economic Forum Africa 2019 event as part of ways to show displeasure to the South African government over the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreigners in the country.

However, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, on Thursday, explained that the governors and Emir attending the World Economic Forum (WEF) in South Africa is not an affront to the decision of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

He added that the delegation was already in South Africa before the decision was taken for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to boycott the event due to xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The minister said this while addressing State House correspondents in Abuja, further noting that the WEF is an international function, which was not organized by South Africa.

“The forum started a long time ago and the governors were already there before our decision was taken”, he said.

Another prominent Nigerian who has been spotted at the forum include a former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili.

This has attracted massive reactions from Nigerians on Twitter who expressed their views on the presence of Nigerians at the event despite the recent xenophobic attacks against its people.
