Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has returned to Spain to joined La Liga side Real Sociedad in a permanent deal.

Monreal has signed a two-year contract with the Spanish club, bringing to an end his six-and-a-half-year spell in north London.

The Spanish left-back joined the Gunners from Malaga in January 2013 and made 251 appearances, scoring 10 goals.

During his time in North London, Nacho played in his natural left-back position and also in central defence.

He won three FA Cups, three Community Shields and played a big part in Arsenal’s run to the Europa League final last season.

A full international since 2009, Nacho was part of the Spain squad at the 2018 World Cup. He’s made 22 appearances for his country.

“We would like to thank Nacho for his contribution to the club and everyone at Arsenal wishes him the best for his future,” Arsenal said in a statement on its website.

Monreal had started all three of Arsenal‘s Premier League games this season and his departure leaves head coach Unai Emery with limited options at left-back.

Sead Kolasinac would be expected to step up and take up the left-back position with summer signing Kieran Tierney still recovering from injury.
