Remembering Samuel Okwaraji 30 Years After His Death

Today, Monday 12th of August 2019 makes it 30 years since Nigerian Footballer, Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji died in active service.

The Nigerian international who was born on May 19, 1964, died on August 12, 1989, during the match against Angola during the 1990 World Cup qualifiers, he collapsed ten minutes into the game.

Samuel Okwaraji, a star of the Super Eagles in the 1980s, who played for Dinamo Zagreb (Yugoslavia), made a name for himself by scoring one of CAN’s fastest goals in 1988 against Cameroon. Brisk, with a remarkable technique, his trajectory ended on August 12, 1989, on a football field.

An autopsy revealed that the 25-year-old had an enlarged heart and very high blood pressure as the cause of his death.

He had a law degree from the University of Rome, he was a professional lawyer who had a masters in international law from the Pontifical Lateran University of Rome.
