Super Eagles winger Alex Iwobi left English Premier League giants Arsenal for Everton because he wants to play at central midfield.

Naija News reports that Iwobi sealed a £40m to Everton on transfer deadline day.

After seeing opening bids rejected by the Gunners earlier this week, Marco Silva landed one of his primary targets ahead of the new season which kicks off tomorrow.

Iwobi will join fellow new arrivals goalkeeper Jonas Lossl, defender Djibril Sidibe, midfielders Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin, and striker Moise Kean.

The Nigeria international has been a Gunner since joining the academy 15 years ago.

He came through the ranks and made his senior debut in October 2015.

Iwobi went on to make 148 appearances, scoring 15 goals, winning one FA Cup and two FA Community Shields in the process.

Speaking to TheCable, a member of Iwobi’s family said Alex Iwobi had no choice but to leave the north London club so as to get regular playing time with the Toffees.

“He left because of his desire to play in his preferred position in the centre of the midfield,” the family member said.

“And also to play regular football at Everton.”

“Everton is an ambitious club with a long tradition and he desires to be part of the history going forward.”

“He [Alex Iwobi] spoke with the manager before signing and he [Unai Emery] informed him that the club had been following his progress for quite some time now and his style of play suited the team,” he said.

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations bronze medallist has the desire to learn and to keep improving his performances for club and country, the source said.

“Alex is looking forward to the challenge and as usual will give his best. He is also looking to meeting his new teammates while calling on Everton fans to stand behind the team in their efforts to have a successful season,” he said.
