Police Justify Teargasing Of Protesters

The police have justified the decision of its operatives to fire tear gas at some protesters participating in the #RevolutionNow protest in Lagos.

As earlier reported by Naija News, security operatives clashed with some of the protesters at the National Stadium in Lagos state. Tear gas was fired to disperse the crowd gathered around the stadium.

Recall the protest was called by Omoyele Sowore, a 2019 presidential candidate of the AAC and publisher of a popular online newspaper. He has however since being arrested on Saturday by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

One of the protesters who spoke to newsmen on Monday claimed the attack by the police on the protesters was an unprovoked one.

However, Tijani Fatai, an assistant commissioner of police, who addressed journalists after the protesters were dispersed, said they had to dislodge the protesters as they didn’t obtain permission from the police before gathering.

According to Fatai when asked why police fired teargas, he answered it was because “Their gathering is unlawful and an unlawful gathering is supposed to be disbanded. They don’t have any permit. Nobody permitted the gathering.”
