The Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, will on Thursday (today) file a case challenging its proscription by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

The latest move by the Shiites group was made known by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN).

Falana told The Punch that some leaders of Shiites had asked his law firm to challenge the proscription order in court.

The constitutional lawyer disclosed that the suit would be filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday.

“They (referring to the Shi’ites leaders) consulted us and they reached an agreement with us to suspend protests in defiance to the legal action, which they instructed us to take.

“I can tell you that the suit will be filed tomorrow (today),” he said.

Naija News reports that the President Buhari-led federal government had published in its Official Gazette the court order proscribing the IMN.

Recall that the federal government last Friday obtained the necessary court order to proscribe the IMN as a terrorist group.

The ex parte application marked FHC/ABJ/CS/876/2019 was filed in the name of the “Attorney-General of the Federation” before the court on Thursday.

The matter was argued on behalf of the government by the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr Dayo Apata.

However, the group had no representatives in court on Friday.

Justice Nkeonye Maha issued the order in a ruling in which she also designated the activities of the Shiite organisation in any part of Nigeria “as acts of terrorism and illegality”.

She ordered the Federal Government to publish the order in its gazette and also in two national dailies.
