The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has informed the Presidential Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja, the nation’s capital that it will not call any witness in defence of the petition by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party and its 2019 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Naija News understands that INEC counsel, Yunus Usman (SAN) announced this at the resumption of proceedings at the Tribunal on Monday, July 29 according to a report The Nation.

This online news platform understands that the electoral umpire was expected to open its defence today but when the case was called, the INEC lawyer said they have scrutinized the evidence by witnesses called by the petitioners and found that there was no need for it.

Naija News understands that the commission was expected to present its witnesses in the next six days.

PDP and its Presidential candidate had closed their case at the five-man Presidential Election Petition Tribunal led by Justice Mohammed Garba.

Naija News recalls that the Justice Garba led tribunal had adjourned till July 29 (today) for the first respondent, INEC, to open its defence.
