Human right activist, Shehu Sani, has reacted to the United States government’s visa restrictions on Nigerians involve in electoral violence during the last general elections.

Ms Morgan Ortagus, a spokesperson of the U.S. Department of State, stated that development applied to those responsible for election-related violence.

Ortagus in a statement said some unnamed individuals had “operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights”.

The former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central in the Senate described the visa restriction by the US as a welcome development and urged other countries to follow the same path.

According to him, the latest decision indicates that “national laws aren’t enough deterrent”.

Sani who took to his Twitter account to react wrote, “The announcement by the US to impose visa restrictions on persons who ‘undermine democracy’ by their role in the last elections is a welcome development; other nations should emulate this.”
