Edo Speaker Reveals When Assembly Will Resume Sitting

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned moves by the House of Representatives to shut down the Edo State House of Assembly.

Naija News reports that the House of Reps asking the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to shut down the Edo State House of Assembly over the crisis rocking the Assembly.

In a statement on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP warned the House against taking such actions.

The main opposition party stated that shutting down the state Assembly would violate the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which in turn could trigger a constitutional crisis in Edo State and the nation at large.

The PDP described the order to security agencies as unconstitutional, provocative and has no place in a democratic dispensation.

The party stated that no section of the 1999 Constitution conferred the House of Representatives with the powers to issue orders to a state governor or direct the shut down of a state House of Assembly.
