Fire Guts Popular Market In Enugu

Goods worth millions of Naira have been destroyed after an inferno attacked the Amaigbo Market in Obiagu, a suburb in Enugu state.

Naija News understands that the fire attacked the market during the early morning hours of Friday, July 12.

The Chairman of the market, Emeka Nnajiofor, told Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who paid a condolence visit to the traders, that the fire broke out at about 1: 00 am on Friday.

Nnajiofor noted that at least 68 petty traders were affected by the incident.

As at the time of this report, the cause of the inferno is still yet to be ascertained.

In her confirmation, the Executive Secretary, Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, Nkechi Eneh said that they got a distress call about the inferno and alerted the state Fire Service which, she said, responded promptly.

“The fire affected 68 traders and they are all gathered here,” Eneh told the governor.

While reacting to the disaster, Ugwuanyi directed the Chairman of Enugu North council area to take the inventory of the loss caused by the fire.

He also requested for the cost of reconstructing the market and forward the same to his office.

On his support for the victims who lost goods as a result of the inferno, the state Governor promised to compensate affected traders with N100,000 each to enable them to return to their businesses.

“We are here to help and console you. The chairman of the council has been directed to evaluate the cost of rebuilding the stalls and report back to us,” Ugwuanyi said.
