EFCC Gives Update On Saraki’s Case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has revealed that its plans to arraign the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on charges of alleged money laundering and looting is still on course.

The anti-graft agency is accusing Dr. Saraki of looting the Kwara State treasury during his time as Governor of the state between 2003 and 2011, Naija News reports.

It was gathered that plans by the EFCC to arraign Saraki in court had earlier hit the brick wall after a restraining order granted against the EFCC by Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Justice Taiwo had granted an ex parte order restraining the commission and five other agencies of the Federal Government from continuing its investigations of corruption allegations against Saraki.

However, a senior EFCC operative confided in Punch that “Saraki’s arraignment cannot be stopped by any court order.”

“We have already protested against the restraining order to the Chief Judge. We will not waste time in arraigning the former Senate President once the order granted by Justice Taiwo is vacated and the case is transferred to a different judge. Saraki will have his day in court soon; nothing can stop it.”

The source noted that the commission had strongly protested against the restraining order to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Abdul Kafarati.

Meanwhile, the EFCC has also reacted to claims by Dr. Saraki that its boss, Ibrahim Magu begged him for confirmation when he was still the Senate President.

It described as false the claim that its acting chairman begged the former Senate President for confirmation.

Reacting in a statement on Sunday, EFCC spokesperson, Tony Orilade, stated that no amount of media campaign against Magu will stop the prosecution of Bukola Saraki.

The EFCC statement comes after Saraki said that the boss of the EFCC had visited him in 2016 and begged him to ensure that he was confirmed by the Senate.
