Four Years After, AU Presents 'Medal Of Honour' To Mcginger Ibeneme, Others For Stopping Ebola

Dr. N. Mcginger Ibeneme and his colleagues with medals for helping to stop the spread of Ebola virus across four African countries.

Naija News understands that Dr. Ibeneme and his colleagues were honoured recently by the AU after helping to stop the spread of Ebola virus four years ago in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea four years ago.

Dr. Ibeneme, who made the development known in a series of tweets on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, dedicates his medal to Dr. Stella A Adedevor and Justina Ejelonu, describing them as the “real heroes”, who “died for us all.”

His words: “4 years later, African Union has remembered to present me and my colleagues with Medal of Honor for stopping Ebola in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea.

“I dedicate this to Dr. Stella A Adedevor and Justina Ejelonu. You guys are the real heroes, you died for us all.”

Ibeneme also dedicated the medal to healthcare workers from Africa who died for their continent in a bid to stop the spread of Ebola virus.

“I dedicate this medal, though probably worthless to healthcare workers from Africa who died for their continent but were never appreciated or even recognized,” he said.

The Nigerian doctor went on to berate the Federal Government for neglecting those who fought the virus, four years.

Dr. Ibeneme recalled that the Goodluck Jonathan administration had planned to honour them but the plans were abandoned after Jonathan lost the 2015 general elections.

“We arrived Abuja after 6 months of risking our lives in West Africa to stop the menace few days after Jonathan had lost the presidential election in 2015 No one paid any attention to us any longer. All the initial plans to honor us was thrown out of the window.”
