The Nigerian military has revealed that not less than 20 people have been killed while 30 other people were severely injured from a bomb detonation at a viewing centre in Konduga, Borno state.

In a report monitored by Naija News, the suicide bombers, a male and female, who were allegedly from  Boko Haram detonated their Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at the viewing centre/joint opposite a clinic in Mandarari ward, Konduga local government area at about 9:15 pm on Sunday.

Another bomber (female) whose IED failed to detonate was apprehended and handed over to the Nigerian Army.

Due to the severity of the incident, the casualty figure is expected to rise later today.

The jihadist group known as Boko Haram began its bloody insurgency in northeastern Nigeria in 2009, but it has since spread into neighboring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting a regional military response.

More than 27,000 people have been killed and two million others displaced, sparking a dire humanitarian crisis in the region. On April 30, the U.S. Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator for Counterterrorism Nathan A. Sales said that the U.S. assesses that Boko Haram and ISWAP “have been responsible for over 35,000 deaths since 2011.”
