The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of at least 1,618 people between December 2018 and February 2019.

Naija News understands that the Corps also revealed that over 21,577 people were involved in road crashes involving cars, minibuses, motorcycles, trucks, tankers and trailers between December, 2018, January and December, 2019.

The Corps made this known in a piece of information contained in the Report of Road Traffic Crash for December, 2018, January and December, 2019.

The Corps in the report revealed that its analysis shows that the top five causes of road accidents in Nigeria were not unconnected to speed violation, wrongful overtaking, dangerous driving, tyre burst and brake failure.

The report highlighted the popular and busy Kaduna-Abuja road as the most prevalent route in cases of accident fatality within the period under review.

Other routes with a high record of road crashes were; the Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Lokoja and Kaduna-Zaria roads, while the report also went ahead to call for patrol and rescue operations along the routes.

“As a matter of fact, the Corps needs to step up enforcement on overspeeding or initiate a high powered technology to detect and stem the tide of overspeeding as part of operational activities,’’ the report added.
