Court Grants Naira Marley N2 Million Bail
A Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial city, has granted Nigerian musician Azeez Fashola popularly known as Naira Marley, bail in the sum of N2 million.
At the resumption of bail application today, Olalekan Ojo, Naira Marley’s lead defense counsel, apologized for his absence at the initial arraignment on May 20 due to heavy down poor.
Naira Marley’s lead defense counsel prayed the court to accept the bail application Prima Facie based on the presumption of his innocence in accordance with Section 162 (1)
Naija News reports that the defense also pleaded that a liberal approach is taken in hearing the bail application.
Rotimi Oyedepo, the prosecution counsel, however, argued that it is not the temporary release of the singer that mattered but the final judgment.
The EFCC lawyer, therefore, prayed the court to grant accelerated hearing rather than bail.
Oyedepo argued that Naira Marley’s lead defense counsel said the defendant is a celebrity, then his actions and inactions have a multiplier effect on youths in the entire federation.
However, after listening to the defense and prosecution arguments, Justice Nicholas Oweibo who presided over the bail hearing granted Naira Marley bail to the sum of two million naira, two sureties.
Justice Oweibo, thereafter, adjourned the matter to 22, 23 and 24 of October for accelerated hearing.
