Zamfara Election New Winners Get Certificates Of Return

The Independent National Electoral Commission has on Monday, presented certificates of return to the new winners of elections in Zamfara State.

This follows an earlier order of the Supreme Court on Friday which sacked all previous winners of the 2019 general elections in the state.

The move follows the dismissal of an appeal challenging the nullification of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) primary elections in Zamfara state, northern Nigeria.

The nation’s apex court also voided all votes cast for the party during the general elections.

The five-member panel of justices, in a unanimous judgment, held that the APC in Zamfara state failed to conduct primaries in accordance with the party rules.

It, therefore, declared that the runners up in the election, which in this case was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), should be declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In all, the APC lost seven House of Representatives seats, three Senatorial positions, 24 House of Assembly seats, and the governorship.

Naija News reports that Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, presented the Certificates of Return to new winners of the Zamfara Governorship and National Assembly Elections in compliance with the Supreme Court Judgment at the electoral institute in Abuja.
