The Senate on Thursday passed the Public Holiday Act Amendment Bill to recognise June 12 as the new Democracy Day.

This is coming after President Muhammadu Buhari announced that the date would replace May 29 as the Democracy Day to celebrate the return to the civilian government.

With the declaration of the President, some criticised him for his declaration while others commended him for his decision.

However, the President’ declaration was approved by the Senate after the lawmakers considered the bill seeking to amend the Public Holiday Act.

The bill which has been passed by the House of Representatives will be sent to the President for assent.
