Presidential Election Petition Tribunal Sitting For Today

The 2019 presidential election petition tribunal continued its sitting today at the premises of the Court of Appeal in Abuja amidst tight security.

Recall the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, winner of the February 23 election, defeating his closest challenger, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with over 3 million votes.

Atiku, and his party, however, rejected the results and are challenging the results in court.

Also, a political party, Hope Democratic Party (HDP), has set a motion to seek an order of the presidential election tribunal restraining President Muhammadu Buhari from presenting himself to be sworn-in on May 29th, 2019

12: 47 PM – The 2019 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has adjourned to May 22, 2019 to determine the status of Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa as Chairperson of the Tribunal

12:15 PM – A request by Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), lawyer to the petitioners – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Atiku Abubakar has halted proceedings at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

12:07 PM – The Tribunal is in session now. The President of the Court of Appeal and Chairperson of the 2019 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa is presiding.

10:15 AM: Lawyers, journalists and other stakeholders already in the Court premises but sitting yet to begin.

9:00 AM: Armed security operatives barricade the Court of Appeal premises in Abuja, venue of the presidential election petition tribunal sitting.
