Benue Election Tribunal: APC’s Appeal Lacks Merit, Ortom Says

Governor Samuel Ortom has filed his defence before the Governorship, National and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Makurdi.Ortom, through Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General Mr Michael Gusa, raised preliminary objections and asked the court to strike out APC’s petition.

“The petition should be dismissed because we are saying that it lacks merit and so it should be dismissed”, Gusa said.”In fact in the first instance, we have seen a lot of infractions against the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, so we have raised preliminary objections that the case be dismissed and also gone ahead to attack the petition on the merit “.

Nigerian Judges Deserve Better Pay, Gov. Ortom Says

Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom who gave the advice in Makurdi while swearing in two high court judges aid their welfare ought to be of utmost concern to shield them from the temptation of compromise.

Judges, by the nature of their duties, are a special breed, who deserve good working conditions to shield them from the temptations of being compromised.”Their welfare and wellbeing ought to be of utmost concern. It is in view of this fact that I appeal to the NJC to review the salaries of judges that have been static for over a decade,” he said.

He also suggested that since the NJC started central control, discipline and payment of salaries and allowances, it was logical for the council to also handle pensions of retired state judges.

Benue News: Mother Stabs Daughter To Death

A Makurdi Magistrates’ court has ordered the remand of a businesswoman, Swuese Moses of Atorgbenda village, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, charged with culpable homicide.The prosecutor, Sgt. Regina Ishaya told the court that the case was transferred from Ukum Divisional Police Headquarters, Zaki-Biam to the state CID, Makurdi via a letter dated Feb 13, 2019.

According to the letter, one Emmanuel Tyonigir of RCM Church, Shenge, Mbazan in Ukum Local Government Area, reported the matter at the Ukum Police Station on Feb 11.Tyonigir stated that on that same Feb 11, the accused used a knife to stab his 25-year-old daughter, Iveren to death.

Naija News understands that the prosecutor said the accused was arrested during police investigation and she confessed committing the crime. The prosecutor also informed the court that investigation into the case was still in progress and asked for another date for mention.
