A 39-year-old man, Datti Buba of Giade in Bauchi State, has been sentenced to death by hanging for allegedly kidnapping and killing two boys in Jigawa.

The presiding judge, Justice Ubale Ahmed Taura said the suspect was arrested on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping and culpable homicide.

The suspect admitted before the court that he and two others, Adamu Sabo and Usman Idrith of Tafawa -Balewa in Bauchi State committed the offences.

He said the offences contradict sections 97, 221, and 273 of the penal code.

Justice Taura has sentenced Datti Buba to five years imprisonment for the offence of criminal conspiracy and ten-year imprisonment for Kidnapping and was also sentenced to death by hanging for culpable homicide.

The two other suspects who were arrested for allegedly having hand in the kidnapping and killing of innocent boys were discharged for lack of evidence to justify Datti Buba’s claim that they committed the offence together.

The convict Datti Buba who spoke with newsmen said he and his colleagues from Taraba kidnapped the boys and requested the ransom of five million Naira.

He explained that they killed their victims because they could not provide the money demanded as ransom in the right time.

Datti said the victims’ relatives were able to raise only N3,350m and they decided to kill them after collecting the ransom.

He said out of the money collected, he only benefited ten thousand Naira only because his colleagues fled to Taraba immediately after collecting the ransom.

The ‎Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Jigawa state command, SP Abdul Jinjiri, in a statement made available to newsmen, said: “the suspect was in the police wanted list early last year.”

Jinjiri added that Buba was declared wanted after he allegedly conspired with eight others and kidnapped two persons in Kafin Madaki of Gwaram Local Government of the State.

The suspect was a gang leader of a criminal syndicate terrorizing some villages in Gwaram Local Government and neighbouring villages in Bauchi State.
