Reports that Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, chairman of the northern senator’s forum, claimed to have said that 82 senators are backing Senator Ahmed Lawan’s aspiration to become president of the Senate, has been refuted by the senator.

This was made known in a statement in Sokoto by Wamakko’s special adviser on media, Bashir Mani.
He said Senator Wammako was quoted erroneously

Meanwhile, the Senate’s spokesperson, Senator Abdullahi Sabi, said he was positive that his colleague, Ahmad Lawan, would clinch two-third votes to emerge as the president of the upper chamber.

He gave the assurance while briefing newsmen yesterday in Abuja.

Sabi said with the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) assurances from the senators-elect across party lines, Lawan would emerge the winner.

Senator Sabi (APC-Niger), who won his re-election to the 9th Senate, said negotiations are already on to garner support for Lawan to emerge president of the senate.
