Wike Cruising In Results So Far Declared

Nyesom Wike, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate and incumbent Governor of Rivers State, has opened up a potentially unassailable lead in the March 9 governorship election contest in the state.

Before the suspension of collation on Tuesday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced results from 15 local government areas, with Wike polling 426,369 votes against 129,855 votes secured by Biokpomabo Awara of the African Action Congress, opening up a margin of 296,514 votes.

Upon resumption of collation on Wednesday when the electoral commission announced more results, Wike extended his lead to 763,603 votes while Awara has 162,180 — a margin of 601,423 votes.

A breakdown of results announced on Wednesday shows Wike polled 12,133 votes to Awara’s 5,071 votes in Degama local government area.

In Asari-Toru Local Government, he had 32,172 votes to Awara’s 18,945; while he also got 11,855 votes to Awara’s 814 in Ogo/Bolo Local Government.

There was however a major surprise as Wike polled a massive 281,164 votes to Awara’s 7,495 in Obio/Akpor Local Government.

There are only four local governments left to be announced.

Naija News reports the ongoing collation was temporarily suspended, and is set to resume by 3pm today.
