Here Are The Major Headlines From Nigerian Newspapers For Friday, 22nd March 2019

1. CCT chairman threatens to jail journalists

The Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, says he will not hesitate to send any journalist “distorting facts from proceedings” to jail.

Umar said this on Thursday while reacting to some newspaper headlines from proceedings on the last adjourned date.

2. INEC announces date for collation and announcement of Rivers governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans and dates for the collation and announcement of governorship election results in Rivers state.

According to the electoral umpire, the collation and announcement of election results for Rivers State will hold between April 2 and 5.

3. FIRS deny plans to increase VAT by 50%

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has denied report of planned increment of Value Added Tax (VAT) by 50 per cent to meet up payment of the newly proposed minimum wage.

Naija News reports that the agency’s Head, Communication and Servicom Department, Wahab Gbadamosi, made this known in a statement in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

4. Trader moni scheme has not ended – FG

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has urged Nigerians and the general public to ignore rumours that the federal government has pulled the plug on the Trader Moni scheme.

The Vice President said this through a statement on Wednesday by his spokesperson Mr Laolu Akande in reaction to rumours that the scheme has ended.

5. No supplementary election in Adamawa State on Saturday, court rules

There has been an indefinite postponement of the supplementary election in Adamawa state earlier scheduled for Saturday 23rd March.

This is occasioned by the ruling of a suit filed against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by Mustafa Shaba, governorship candidate of the Movement For Restoration and Defense for Democracy (MRDD).

6. Probe Army’s involvement in 2019 elections, Falana urges FG

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has urged the Federal Government to probe the involvement of military personnel in Rivers and other states during the 2019 elections.

In a statement issued to newsmen, Falana stated that the Nigerian Army was not deployed by INEC or President Muhammadu Buhari, to provide security in any of the collation centers in Rivers, thereby making their role ‘illegal’.

7. Okorocha drags INEC to court over certificate of return

The outgoing Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission before the court over the failure of the electoral umpire to issue him a certificate of return as an elected Senator.

Okorocha has asked the Abuja division of the Federal High Court to grant an order compelling INEC to issue him with a Certificate of Return as the Senator- elect for Imo West senatorial district.

8. Tinubu opposes wife’s new political ambitions

The national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu seems to be opposing the new political ambitions of Senator Oluremi Tinubu, lawmaker representing Lagos Central Senatorial District.

Naija News understands that Bola Tinubu seems not to be in support of Oluremi Tinubu‘s ambition to become the Deputy Senate President in the 9th National Assembly.

9. PDP blames INEC for the outcome of 2019 elections

Naija News has obtained the details of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 85 (Emergency) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which held on Wednesday, March 20.

At the meeting, the opposition party alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Nigeria’s electoral umpire, was the culprit of the 2019 general elections.

10. Donald Trump speaks tough on ending ISIS

President Donald Trump of the United States has expressed confidence that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria will be eliminated from its last territory in Syria on Thursday.

Trump who was speaking at the White House, announced that the last of the Islamic State’s territory in Syria was currently being liberated by US-backed forces and that the situation would be resolved “by tonight.’’
