INEC Speaks On Military Rigging Rivers Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Nigeria’s electoral umpire, says the Nigerian military intervened in the March 9 governorship and house of assembly elections in Rivers state, southern Nigeria, but it could not say if the involvement was to rig.

Naija News reports that the electoral umpire suspended the electoral process in the state that same day citing widespread violence as its reason.

Declare Me Winner Or Cancel Feburary 23 Elections – Atiku Tells Tribunal

Nineteen days after the declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari as a winner of the February 23, presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his party have finally filed a petition challenging Buhari’s re-election.

Atiku and his party are challenging Buhari’s reelection on the grounds of alleged massive riggings, malpractices and non-compliance substantially with the electoral laws.

A former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Tunji Shelle, has accused the candidate of his party, Jimi Agbaje, of causing the PDP’s defeat in the just concluded governorship election.

Speaking to Daily Independent, Shelle explained that rather than unite the party leadership, Agbaje sowed a seed of discord and refused efforts by Nigerians to join hands with leaders in the state to achieve results.

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, on Monday, revealed that his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari was the usual briefing borne out of his passion for security and peace in the state.

Speaking with State House correspondents after a private meeting with the president, the governor said that the last election in the state was peaceful and he would want INEC to also conduct peaceful supplementary elections.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has warned banks and other financial institutions to be wary of pressures from the outgoing Governor Ibikunle Amosun to obtain last-minute loans, overdrafts and other financial instruments barely two months to the end of his tenure.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday by its publicity secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, the party warned that any institution that grants such requests “does so at its own risk”.

A thirteen-year-old girl suspected to be a suicide bomber has been arrested near Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
