Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche has words of advice for women who she thinks needs confidence in themselves.

Chimamanda while speaking on CNN African Voices pointed out to how confident she has become and why she thinks women should not invest energy in people liking them.

“Wear what you want to wear. I say that as a kind of joke, but in a larger sense, it would be: don’t think you have to do what people want you to do,” she said.

“Increasingly, in part of growing older for me–I’m 41, and when I was 30 when I was 27, I think I was a little invested in thinking of what people expected and what people wanted. And I think it is mentally exhausting. And it takes away from yourself the energy that you could have used to do the things that are actually meaningful to you.”

“Now I feel old and wiser and I would say to that younger self, and actually, I would say also to young women all over the world: it is so important to think that you don’t have to perform for somebody else. It is really important to do what I like to call own yourself.”
