1. Finally, ASUU, FG reach agreement to end strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has finally reached an agreement with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to end the over three months strike.
Naija News reports that the agreement was reached and a deal was signed at a meeting in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital on Thursday, February 7.
2. SDP dumps Donald Duke, adopt Buhari as presidential candidate
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced its withdrawal from the forthcoming presidential election.
In a statement as part of the resolutions of its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, the party adopted the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari.
3. APC wants INEC to postpone Rivers governorship election
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers state has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to conduct the election in the state noting that it will be handing the state to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate on a platter of gold.
Naija News understands that, INEC has upheld its position on cancelled direct and indirect primaries held in the state.
4. Sani Usman announces sudden retirement from service
The Nigerian Army has been notified of the sudden retirement of the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen Sani Usman.
Usman revealed this in a statement on Thursday where he disclosed his voluntary retirement from service.
5. Agbakoba sues AGF, NJC over Onnoghen’s suspension
Constitutional lawyer and former President of Nigerian Bar Association, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), has dragged the Attorney General of the Federation and the National Judicial Council (NJC) to court over the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Agbakoba also asked the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial city to declare as unconstitutional the procedure adopted by President Muhammadu Buhari to suspend Onnoghen.
6. Biafra: See the ‘deal’ IPOB’s Nnamdi Kanu signed with Buhari govt
The leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, reportedly signed a deal with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to push for an election boycott in South Eastern part of Nigeria.
Naija News reports that Kanu and his group have on several occasions called on Nigerians from the South East part of the country to boycott the nation’s general elections.
7. EFCC secures arrest warrant against ex-NIA boss, Ayo Oke and wife
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has secured an order of arrest against embattled former National Intelligence Agency boss, Ayodele Oke and his wife, Folasade Oke.
Naija News understands that Justice Chukwujeku Aneke issued the order consequent upon oral application argued by the anti-graft agency Rotimi Oyedepo.
8. No plans to postpone 2019 general elections – INEC
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has stated that the commission will not postpone the forthcoming general elections.
He stated this on Thursday while speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting, organized by the electoral umpire.
9. Trump nominates David Malpass to replace Jim Kim as World Bank president
US President Donald Trump has nominated David Malpass, a critic of multilateral institutions like the World Bank, to replace Jim Yong Kim as the World Bank president, Naija News understands.
Malpass is a Trump loyalist, who served as senior economic adviser to the president during his campaign in 2016, and currently the undersecretary for international affairs at the Treasury Department of the United States.
10. Body recovered from plane wreckage is that of Emiliano Sala
Police have confirmed that the body found in the wreckage of a plane carrying Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson has been identified as the Cardiff City striker.
The UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) had confirmed on Wednesday that an unidentified body had been passed to the Dorset Coroner after it was recovered from the English Channel.
