Here Are The Major Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Tuesday, 5th February 2019

1. How lobbyists got Atiku ‘temporary waiver’ to enter US

The travel ban on the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, was waived temporarily by the US state department after lobbyists mounted a campaign among congressional lawmakers, a report has said.

Naija News recalls that Abubakar, a former Vice President of Nigeria, entered the United States for the first time in 13 years last month.

2. President Buhari swears in ICPC Chairman Bolaji Owasanoye and other board members

President Muhammadu Buhari has sworn in Professor Bolaji Owasanoye as the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The President on Monday also inaugurated eight new members into the commission while the oaths of office were taken.

3. Onnoghen: Senate withdraws case from supreme court, lauds NJC

The Senate has ordered that the case filed at the Supreme Court on the suspension of Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen be stopped.

This followed the intervention of the National Judicial Council on the issue.

4. Oshiomhole reveals those who would buy NNPC if Atiku emerges President

Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress has alleged that Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party is pursuing a capitalist agenda of the International Monetary Fund.

Recall that Atiku announced publicly that he would sell Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to some investors as part of his plan to reduce the liabilities of the state-owned oil company to the benefit of ordinary Nigerians.

5. 2019: Nigerian witches endorse Atiku for Presidency

Ahead of the forthcoming election, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has been endorsed by the Association of White Witches in Nigeria, AWWN.

AWWN in its statement claimed that Atiku was endorsed after a marathon meeting at Obudu Mountain and Zuma Rock in Abuja.

6. Over 50 retired generals, others endorse Buhari

Thirteen major generals and twelve brigadier-generals have endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of the February 16 Presidential election in the country.

Naija News reports that Caleb Olubolade, a retired Navy captain and minister of police affairs under former president Goodluck Jonathan, also endorsed the President for a second term.

7. FG exposes plot to discredit 2019 election

The Nigerian government has alleged that plans are already ongoing by some political parties in the state to discredit the outcome of the forthcoming presidential election if Buhari wins.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed made this allegation at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, February 4.

8. Ezekwesili officially resigns from ACPN

The former presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN, Dr Oby Ezekwesili has officially resigned her membership of the party.

She has also returned the party’s membership card and all other party items in her possession.

9. Shiites blow hot, claim Buhari is on his way out of office

Ahead of the forthcoming Presidential election, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (Shiites) on Monday claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari was on his way out of office.

It says Buhari can feel the imminent defeat coming his way.

10. Again, suspended CJN Onnoghen fails to appear at CCT

The suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen, on Monday failed to appear at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over the non-assets declaration charge preferred against him.

During proceedings, the Danladi Umar-led tribunal confirmed Onnoghen’s solemn absence at 10:28 am.

However, counsel to Onnoghen, Adegnoyega Awomolo (SAN) prayed the CCT to grant an adjournment, stating that the Nigeria Judiciary Council (NJC) had intervened in the matter with a directive to Onnoghen to respond to a petition against him within seven days.
