Senate Orders Case Against Onnoghen Discontinued

The Senate has ordered that the case filed at the Supreme Court on the suspension of Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen be stopped.

This followed the intervention of the National Judicial Council on the issue.

Meanwhile, Naija News reports that the Code of Conduct Tribunal earlier today,  adjourned trial of Onnoghen till February 13 as he was absent from court.

But a few hours ago, a statement signed by Yusuph Olaniyonu, Special Adviser to the Senate President, the Senate announced that it has decided to give the NJC intervention a chance.

“The Senate has therefore decided to discontinue the case it filed in the Supreme Court.

“It should be noted that the case has been slated for hearing tomorrow (Tuesday, February 5th).

“This decision also affirms the confidence of the Senate in the ability of the NJC to successfully and creditably resolve the issues,” the statement added.

Recall also that as earlier reported, the Nigerian Bar Association had reportedly met with Vice President  Yemi Osinbajo giving a six-point term, geared at providing a soft landing for CJN, Onnoghen.

The terms include, CJN to resign or retire without coercion; Govt to withdraw all charges against Onnoghen; no molestation of CJN under any guise; Acting CJN should quit; NBA team to prevail on relatives, friends to persuade Justice Onnoghen to resign; and consensus on the need to clean up the Judiciary (long term measure).
