FG Gives Update On New Minimum Wage Payment

Rep Passes N30,000 Minimum Wage

The House of Representatives has passed the bill increasing the national minimum wage and adopted N30,000 as recommended by the tripartite committee.

The lower legislative chamber passed the bill after considering the report of its ad hoc committee during plenary earlier today.

The passage comes about a week after President Muhammadu Buhari sent the wage bill for legislative consideration, following its approval by the national council of state.

Naija News recalls the council had approved the sum of N27,000 while the federal government said it would increase it to N30,000 for its workers.

But while considering the bill, the lawmakers resolved to leave the national minimum wage as recommended by the tripartite committee. They also resolved that the bill would be effective the day it is assented to by the president.

They, however, retained the original clause in the bill which excluded employers of less than 25 people from paying the new minimum wage.

Recall that as reported in earlier publications, Speaker Yakubu Dogara had during the public hearing on the new minimum wage, opined that N30,000 is too small for Nigerian workers, urging the government to work towards paying a living wage and not just minimum wage.

In the face of the recent development, the bill would be sent to the Senate for concurrence.

Earlier, the lawmakers concluded debate on the 2019 Appropriation Bill, as well as read and passed it through the second reading.

They consequently referred the bill to the House Appropriations Committee and other related sub-committees for further actions.

The House then adjourned plenary till February 19, after the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
