1. Nigerian Senate To Reconvene Tuesday Over Onnoghen’s Suspension

The Nigerian Senate will reconvene on Tuesday, January 29, over the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). Naija News had reported earlier that President Muhammadu Buhari suspended Onnoghen on Friday and immediately appointed Tanko Mohammed as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

2. Acting CJN Swears In 250 Election Tribunal Members

The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Mohammed, has sworn in 250 members of the 2019 election petition tribunal. Naija News reports that this is coming a day after Justice Water Onnoghen was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari and replaced by Mohammed.

3. Biafra ‘Leader’ Nnamdi Kanu Moves To The United Kingdom

The self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has relocated to the United Kingdom after spending over a year in Israel. He was actively involved in a fight for the independence of the Biafra Nation in Nigeria escaped from the country after soldiers of the Nigerian Army stormed the Afara Ukwu, Umuahia country home resulting in a clash between IPOB supporters and the soldiers, leaving several dead.

4. PDP Suspends Presidential Campaign Over Onnoghen’s Suspension

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, has suspended its campaign for 72 hours to protest the suspension of Walter Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). Naija News reports that President Muhammadu Buhari suspended Onnoghen on Friday, citing an order by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

5. Onnoghen: PDP Is Crying More Than The Bereaved – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has described as a face-saving measure the decision by the PDP to pull the brakes on its electioneering campaign over Justice Walter Onnoghen’s suspension, saying the PDP’s campaign never gained traction in the first instance.

Human rights attorney, Femi Falana, says it is “unfortunate that the Bar and the Bench have played into the hands of the sponsors of incipient fascism” in Nigeria in reaction to the suspension of Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). 7. ASUU Speaks On Receiving N163 Billion From Buhari Govt

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it has not received funding from the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government over its ongoing nationwide strike. Naija News reports that the union clarified the situation in reaction to reports credited to Nigeria’s Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, that the government released N163 billion to public universities from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, says the suspension of Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) should unite those from South East and South-South, who he refers to as “Biafrans”. 10. Naomi Osaka Wins Australian Open Title, Becomes World No. 1

Japanese Naomi Osaka has won the 2019 Australian Open title after beating Petra Kvitova 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-4 in the final. Naija News reports that the development means that the 21-year-old also becomes the new WTA World No. 1 when the rankings are released on Monday, January 28.
