The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Mohammed, has sworn in 250 members of the 2019 election petition tribunal.

Naija News reports that this is coming a day after Justice Water Onnoghen was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari and replaced by Mohammed.

Giving reasons for his decision in his speech which was obtained by Naija News, the President said there was an order from the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, asking him to wield the big stick.

President Buhari said the order demanded that the CJN be suspended depending on the determination of his ongoing trial at the tribunal.

This online news medium understands that the swearing of the election tribunal was Mohammed’s first official assignment since he took over from Onnoghen who was suspended over allegations of false declaration of assets.

At the inauguration ceremony, Mohammed told members of the panel to discharge their duties diligently.

The Acting CJN said the judiciary is experiencing trying times, urging them to stand up to protect it.
