Polytechnic Lecturers Continue Strike Action

Striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) have vowed to continue their ongoing strike until government meets all their demands.

The polytechnic lecturers who lamented the way government is handling the issues of technical education in Nigeria, warned that government action is capable of hindering the growth and development of the country.

Comrade Usman Dutse, ASUP president, told journalists that the Wednesday scheduled meeting between the minister of Education, Adamu Adamu and the union over the ongoing strike could not hold as both the minister and the permanent secretary were indisposed.

Dutse also called on all stakeholders to join hands to propel the government to tackle problems in the nation’s education sector.

He said “the review of the Polytechnic Act; needs assessment; the issue of CONTISS 15; the issue of academic allowance, unpaid salaries in some states; and our victimised officials, but the critical ones are the needs assessment and Polytechnic Act.”

“The meeting could not hold today because the key stakeholders were said to be indisposed, so they were absent and the meeting could not hold because we believe the meeting should not hold in their absence because this strike is critical to the sector and the issues are germane and is very central to the development of the sector. We believe it’s high time that government takes step to resolve these issues.

“Remember we met on the 17th of December where we agreed to meet on the 10th of January so that we will brief and be informed on the progress made towards addressing the lingering issues; the meeting could not hold today and that shows that nothing could be achieved and sincerely as major stakeholders with the sector and active members of the sector we are not happy with the development.”

Naija News recalls that ASUP had on December 12, 2018, embarked on the current strike action that has crippled academic activities in most polytechnics across the country as part of efforts to ensure government responds to its demands.
