1. Organized labour threatens strike action over minimum wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday reiterated its resolve to proceed on a prolonged nationwide strike over the failure of the government to implement the new minimum wage of N30,000 for Nigerian workers.

The resolve is coming upon the expiration of the deadline given by labour to the government to implement the new minimum wage.

2. Shiite members attend new year service in catholic church

Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria also known as Shiites today, attended the 2019 New Year Church Service in Zaria, Kaduna State, to strengthen inter-religious harmony and enhance national cohesion.

The group attended the service at St. Mary’s Parish Church, Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State.

3. Atiku laments massive job loss among Nigerian youths

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP‘s Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar has called out President Muhammadu Buhari-led government , over the massive job loss and over 90 million Nigerians living in poverty under the regime.

Atiku also faulted President Buhari for claiming that he had fulfiled all his campaign promises when he spoke recently at Uyo, Akwa Ibom capital.

4. NLC unrealistic for insisting on N30,000 minimum wage – Governors

Governors of the 36 states of the federation on Monday, described the insistence of the Nigerian Labour Congress on N30,000 minimum wage as an attempt to hold the country to ransom.

The governors, speaking through the platform of the Nigeria Governors Forum, insisted that they were not capable of paying the minimum wage been demanded by the NLC due to economic and financial realities.

5. 2019 elections, not a do or die affair – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to ensure a free, fair and credible 2019 elections for the country, warning politicians not to make it a do or die affair.

This was part of the president’s new year message to the people of Nigeria on the first day of the new year.

6. Ezekwesili promises better economy for Nigeria if elected president

Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, the presidential candidate of the Allied Congress of Nigeria (ACPN), in her new year massage to Nigerians has outlined her plans for the country if elected president.

Ezekwesili, who promised to make Nigeria’s economy the most innovative in the entire Africa, said that if well-managed, Nigeria’s economy would outshine that of its contemporaries in Africa.

7. President Buhari is dedicated to ending Boko Haram – Borno governor

Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, said that the dedication of President Muhammadu Buhari to ending the scourge of insurgency in the North East was the reason he was yet to criticize him.

The governor made this known when he hosted an “extraordinary security meeting” in the state capital, Maiduguri on Tuesday, to address the recent series of attacks on the military and deteriorating security in the state.

8. Senator Dino Melaye vows to remain in hiding from police

Senator Dino Melaye has said he won’t hand himself over to the Nigerian police force who have declared him wanted for culpable homicide.

He gave the hint via a post on his twitter handle where he said there is a difference between been sacred and been wise.

9. US embassy says it will continue visa interviews

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced that its offices in Abuja and Lagos remain open for all consular business.

This was confirmed in a statement on its website and social media pages on New Year’s Day, urging applicants to attend their scheduled interview.

10. Orji Uzor Kalu named as part of Buhari’s campaign team

Despite being accused of a N7.7 billion fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abia state former governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, has been appointed into the committee for the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Kalu has been out of the country on alleged health grounds.
