Here Are The Major Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Wednesday, 12th December, 2018

1. Atiku absent as 2019 presidential candidates sign peace accord

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alh. Atiku Abubakar was on Tuesday, absent at the signing of the peace accord organized by the National Peace Committee.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has regretted and blamed the failure of its Presidential Candidate to show up for the peace accord to communication lapse.

2. ASUP commences indefinite strike action today

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has insisted that there is no going back on its planned indefinite strike beginning in all the nation’s polytechnics today.

Mr Usman Dutse, the National President of the union who made the declaration in an interview on Monday, said that the strike became necessary following the failure of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 and 2017 agreements reached with the union.

3. Nigerian Army denies allegation of war crimes by ICC

The Nigerian Army, through its spokesman, Sani Usman has denied allegations that the Nigerian army has committed war crimes against humanity.

This is following accusations by the International Criminal Court (ICC), that there are reasonable basis to believe that the Nigerian military committed the war crimes against humanity.

4. President Buhari signs 2019 election peace accord

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday, joined other presidential candidates to sign a peace accord for the 2019 general elections.

The signing was organized by the Abdusalami Abubakar led National Peace Committee towards ensuring a free, fair and credible election in Nigeria.

5. Senators disagree over composition of EFCC members

The Senate chamber has been thrown into a rowdy session as lawmakers disagreed over the confirmation of four new members of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The senators submitted that the membership of the commission did not folloow the federal character principle as some regions have been marginalized.

6. US accuses Jonathan of misrepresenting facts in his book, ‘my transition hours’.

The United States Consulate in Nigeria has responded to the allegation by Former President Goodluck Jonathan in his book “My Transition Hour” that a former United State President caused his loss at the 2015 polls.

Jonathan accused former American President, Barack Obama of interfering in the 2015 election that produced President Muhammadu Buhari.

7. IPOB members dressed in Jewish clothes protest in Umuahia

Members of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), dressed as Jews, shut down the streets of Umuahia on Tuesday, demanding Biafra restoration.

Members of IPOB, led by Nnamdi Kanu have always insisted that it is their constitutional right to demand for Biafra republic and have called on the government to conduct a referendum on the sovereign state of Biafra.

8. Senator Dariye still receiving wages and allowances despite being in prison

It has been revealed that Senator Joshua Dariye is still receiving the N750, 000 salary and N13.5m monthly running cost from the National Assembly, six months after his conviction by a Federal Capital Territory High Court.

Dariye, who represents Plateau-Central Senatorial District, is still been paid the allowances because his seat had yet to be declared vacant.

9. BON invites only five parties for 2019 presidential debate

Nigerian Elections Debate Group (NEDG) and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) have named only five political parties, to participate in 2019 vice presidential and presidential debates.

According to a statement signed by the Executive Secretary of the NEDG, Eddi Emesiri, the parties are Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Young Progressives Party (YPP).

10. President Buhari thanks Swiss government for returning Nigeria’s stolen money

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Abuja said Nigerian government remains deeply grateful to the government and people of Switzerland for their support in resuscitating the economy, especially the return of illegally stolen funds.

Receiving Letters of Credence from the Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, Mr George Steiner, at the Presidential Villa, President Buhari said the return of stolen funds and interventions in the crisis in the North East further indicate the Swiss government’s commitment to the development of Nigeria.
